Who is Keung To - chapter VII - Keung To’s Artisan Duty

Wrote by Mori from Denmark 24/09/2024

Before stepping on the stage of HKT x WestKpopFest, Keung To noticed the tension and nerves among his backup dancers. He shared a few words with them, which he later recounted during a radio interview while promoting Dummy. The audience tonight might not like what we’re about to do, but we need to share our energy and support each other out there.”

Despite months of harsh criticism and relentless cyberbullying that visibly took a toll on KT’s confidence, he continued to prioritize others, as he always does. It’s likely this genuine concern for those around him that elevates the performances of those who work with him. Together, they stole the show that evening.

From the rundown of his performance it’s clear that this is not just a message to his supporters, but also a reflection of his own inner dialogue through his selection of songs.

"Super Champion" represents his original intentions, "Masterclass" embodies his ambition. "Dummy" signifies a wake-up call, while "Mirror in the Mirror" reflects his internal struggles. "Enough" represents the external pressures he faces, and "Say I Love You With Mask on “expresses his gratitude.

This 23-minute performance reflects Keung To's phased summary of his emotional journey through the setbacks and pain he has experienced in the past as well as the lesson he’s learned. Apart from Dummy, the choreography for the other songs was rearranged, staying true to Keung To's style of tailoring performances to suit each occasion.

Keung was known for his relentless pursuit of perfection, pushing his teams to achieve the highest possible standards. This dedication to excellence is a hallmark of the artisan spirit, where the quality of the work is of paramount importance.

The debut performance of "Dummy" for example, featured a puppetry concept. From the blank facial expressions to puppet-like, controlled body movements, both the singer and dancers not only delivered an impeccable performance but also electrified the atmosphere of the venue. Although Keung To performed "Dummy" again soon after at the One Love Asia concert in Kuala Lumpu the choreography had noticeably changed.

The music video was also reimagined.

Highly valuing his stage performances, Keung To continuously experiments with new elements in his live performances especially those involving singing and dancing, aiming for perfection and ensuring his work remains fresh and enduring.

"Timeless innovation" is the ideal and standard that Keung To, with his artisan spirit, has always strived to achieve.

I doubt that those who only criticize or even personally attack Keung To could match his resilience. Very few people could, like him, fall from great heights, suffer severe physical and mental blows, and still grit their teeth and stand up again. Even if they could, could they also sincerely thank those who like them as well as those who wish they would disappear?

Keung To has never been one to explain himself much, nor does he make excuses. In response to criticism, the only thing he can do is work hard to improve himself, holding onto the simple belief that “I hope one day others will change their view of me and think I’m at least a decent artist.” What he offers isn't just hard work, but a commitment to professionalism of the highest standard possible.

A person who can possess such magnanimity and stature would likely succeed in any field they choose, wouldn’t you agree?
